NAMI National Signature Programs: A Crash Course for New Program Directors and Coordinators


Welcome to the wide world of NAMI Program Directors and Program Coordinators! We hear it all the time, “There is so much to learn, and I don’t know where to start or where to find anything!” In this plenary, we hope to answer a lot of those questions, as seen through the eyes of two individuals who are new to their NAMI education roles. . Joel become the Program Director at NAMI Keystone PA earlier this year and Cailey became the Program Coordinator at NAMI Chester County PA about one year ago. Through a dynamic Q&A session with Susan Caban, Interim Chief Programs Officer of NAMI Signature Programs, Joel and Cailey will share  what they've learned about resources, responsibilities, and procedures. They will also share  methods they've come up with to navigate the unique challenges that can present themselves to NAMI Staff who are involved in Signature Program management.   

 

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to: 

  • Define three challenges that NAMI Program Director and Coordinator experience and identify ways to overcome them.
  • Identify at least three important resources available for NAMI National Signature Program coordination, where to find them and how to use them. 
  • Apply some of the unique techniques and methods Cailey and Joel have developed as new Program coordinators.

Workshop #1: Diverse Voices. Powerful Impact: Multicultural Outreach Programs

During this workshop, NAMI NJ will share how they developed four homegrown multicultural outreach programs (African American, Chinese, Hispanic/Latinx, and South Asian). Each outreach program offers inclusive NAMI signature programs, phone support, provider list, newsletters, and educational opportunities for individuals and families affected by mental illness. Attendees will learn about the tools used to build the current program structure including staffing, volunteer recruitment, needs assessments, funding, and strategic planning.   


At the end of this presentation, attendees will be able to: 

  • Discuss the importance of culturally competent programming and how to integrate it throughout the programs. 
  • Identify outreach strategies to build a multicultural program. 
  • Identify ways to offer NAMI Signature Programs to diverse communities

Workshop #2: Overcoming Barriers With Attendance in NAMI Family Education Programs

Are you marketing your NAMI Family Education Programs on websites, social media, flyers and through emails, but classes are still not filling up? Or do you have a full class of 16 individuals registered and only eight show up the first day? Why???  In this workshop, we will identify some of the barriers to filling a course, getting people there and keeping them until graduation.   


At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:  

  • Identify at least three marketing tools to increase attendance in a NAMI Signature Program.  
  • Define who your audience is and how to create a marketing strategy to reach them.   
  • Identify two ways to decrease program drop-outs.

Workshop #3: Get to Know NAMI Family & Friends

This interactive session is an introduction to the NAMI Family & Friends, a presentation designed for people who have loved ones with a mental health condition and how best to support those loved ones.  This workshop will discuss the topics covered in NAMI Family & Friends, and include a  short demonstration of the program. Presenters will also share updates to the program and presenter training.    


At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to: : 

  • Describe the subject matter of the of the NAMI Family & Friends programs 
  • Identify updated presenter qualifications.

Workshop #1: Refresh & Reclaim: Using Personal Values, Boundaries & Self-care to Support Mental Health

NAMI program leaders can get burnt out or often have difficulty maintaining healthy boundaries with program attendees. It is our responsibility as program directors to help our volunteers stay healthy and safe. Refresh & Reclaim: A Boundaries & Self-Care Workshop is a free 45 to 60-minute interactive and introspective workshop that examines the importance of the relationship between values-based healthy boundaries and a comprehensive self-care regimen.  Learn how this program uses research-based information to guide introspection, identifies barriers in participants personal and/or professional lives that prevent healthy boundaries and how to confront those barriers and teaches communication tips and maintenance strategies to use in times of challenge or opposition.  


At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:  

  • Identify personal values and how to incorporate them into boundaries and self- care.  
  • Define how to overcome opposition to boundaries in personal and professional relationships.  
  • Create a list of self-care methods that are tailored to an individual's various situations and barriers.

Workshop #2 Novel Approach to Growing Support Groups from 5 to over 100 per Month Without Stressing Leaders

How does a NAMI in-person Support Group of five people/month (pre-covid) grow to accommodate over a 100 individuals per month?  Follow NAMI Western PA Borderline Personality Family Support Group’s story as we created a novel way  to scale the NAMI Support Group model with added benefits!  Our expansion has been more than we could have ever imagined AND (note the “Dialectic”) we continue to adapt to keep our leaders healthy and less stressed while remaining open to new families. 


At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:  

  • Define ways to grow online NAMI Support Groups that span across the US.  
  • Describe how to use the NAMI Support Group model to accommodate large growth and  keep leaders healthy and less stressed.  
  • Apply new method to grow NAMI Support Groups.

Workshop #3: Transforming Care: Peer Support Group Implementation in the Inpatient Hospital Setting

This workshop will detail NAMI WLA's journey of launching in-person peer support groups at hospital units, with a focus on the successful implementation of NAMI Connections Peer Support Groups at UCLA's Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital. Attendees will gain insights into strategies for collaborating with hospital staff and admin, recruiting and training peers, strategies for facilitating groups in a hospital setting, and understanding the benefits of peer support during in patient hospitalization.   


At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:  

  • Identify how to collaborate  with hospital staff and administration to launch NAMI Connection Support Groups  in hospital units. 
  • Identify challenges that can arise in hospital settings with  peers who are experiencing acute mental health crises.  
  • Describe the benefits of peer support in inpatient settings.

This workshop will provide information and answer questions about the technology and online resources that program coordinators use daily. Sarah Hines will show you how to get the most out of NAMI 720 and provide a tease of what’s to come. Susan will take you on a tour of where to find what resources and how to manage your program leaders’ information. This is your time to get the answers to your questions from Sarah and Susan during the Q&A!

  • Navigate NAMI 720 to input program information, advertise programs on NAMI.org, and collect program data from your state and affiliate.

Workshop #3: Bridging the Gaps: NAMI Syracuse's NAMI Homefront Model 2.0

NAMI Syracuse will share how they have increased the interest and attendance for their NAMI Homefront courses with inventive ideas They will share how they were able to provide childcare, host NAMI Peer-to-Peer and NAMI Homefront concurrently, and offer programs in a hybrid format to meet the needs of their audience so that both veterans and families were able to receive NAMI support and education.

  • Identify how to  duplicate this model at their own affiliates.

Workshop #1: Blueprint for Progress: Strategies for Effective Program Implementation

Program implementation serves as a crucial step in ensuring the successful execution of a NAMI National Signature Program.  This workshop will help by equipping Program Coordinators with the knowledge, skills, and resources needed to successfully launch a NAMI National Signature Program. An Action Plan Template will be provided to serve as a resource for navigating through the implementation process. 


At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to: 

  • Define strategies to set attainable programming goals that align with the mental health needs of the communities they serve.  
  • Identify top tips for engaging and recruiting volunteers. 
  • Identify ideas for funding sources.  
  • Identify the basics of program evaluation and the importance of measuring program implementation progress.

Workshop #1: Resilience and Empathy

This presentation includes NAMI Frontline Wellness and information on NAMI Southeast Louisiana’s Support Group for Healthcare workers, especially those in emergency departments. This presentation helps those present navigate these resources while having the discussion on resilience and how to develop empathy as a skill.  


At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able: 

  • Identify two resources to increase mental health awareness in healthcare workers. 
  • Identify 3 key resilience behaviors.  
  • Initiate at least one behavior to increase empathy.

Workshop #2: Small Talk: Age-Appropriate Mental Health Education for Elementary Level Students

This workshop will introduce attendees to NAMI Bucks County’s Small Talk, an engaging 30 to 45-minute program where students in grades K-5 discuss mental health, learn how to name their feelings, differentiate between emotions, and practice healthy coping skills. Students of Small Talk receive an activity book to reflect and follow along with the presentation; teachers and families receive a resource guide and tips to encourage the coping skills the students learned. The program’s goal is to improve prevention and early intervention as an enhancement of NAMI’s Ending the Silence by providing an age-appropriate conversation around mental health. 


At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able: 

  • Define the need for mental health education at the Elementary School level. 
  • Describe effective ways to deliver mental health education to K-5 students. 
  • Describe how to engage youth in a fun and educational manner when talking about mental health.
